IIM Jammu conducts entrepreneurship programmes at GCET Jammu and GDC Hiranagar to inspire innovation and self-employment.
IIM Jammu recently took important steps to light the spark of entrepreneurship among students in Jammu region by conducting its latest Entrepreneurship Awareness Programmes at Government College of Engineering and Technology Jammu and Government Degree College Hiranagar. These sessions marked the fourth and fifth events in a wider outreach initiative that aims to bring entrepreneurial thinking into the mainstream student community.
The sessions were organised on February 20 and 21, 2026, under an outreach drive supported and funded by the Development Commissioner MSME, Government of India. The idea behind this initiative is to strengthen the ecosystem of small and medium enterprises across emerging urban and semi-urban regions and to show students that they have the potential to build businesses rather than just seek jobs.
At both colleges, students were introduced to structured entrepreneurial pathways, guided on how to move from mere ideas into viable business ventures, and encouraged to think about local and global opportunities with confidence. The facilitators talked about common obstacles in starting up, the basics of business planning, and the mindset needed to persist in uncertain conditions. Many students stayed back after sessions to ask questions about funding, prototyping and how to find mentors.
Students from scientific, technical and arts backgrounds attended the programmes, showing that the appeal for starting something new knows no single academic domain. A few aspiring entrepreneurs shared their early ideas with mentors at the events, and some participants said they felt more confident and aware of alternatives to traditional job searches.
The broader vision of this outreach series is tied to national goals of building more self-employment opportunities and boosting the regional economy as part of India’s journey towards a more developed and innovation-driven society by 2047. By introducing youth to entrepreneurial thinking early, organisers hope to not only demystify business creation but also equip youngsters with practical skills they might otherwise not get in usual college classes.
Teachers and college heads present at the events also welcomed the idea, saying such programmes help bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world enterprise skills. Many said they would like similar sessions on problem solving, business modelling and digital marketing to be part of regular student learning.
For students who may not have considered entrepreneurship before, these awareness programmes have already made some rethink their career goals, and organisers hope this change in mindset will lead to more innovators and job creators in the coming years.
