IIT Delhi Introduces MA Program in Culture, Society, Thought

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has launched a unique MA program. The institute's Department of Humanities and Social Sciences has developed a new MA in Culture, Society, and Thought course. The two-year full-time curriculum will study culture, society, and thinking using the fundamental disciplines of sociology, literature, and philosophy.

The application procedure for admissions to the newly created program will commence on March 20, 2024, for the academic year beginning July 2024. The application deadline for the program is April 4, 2024.

Eligibility

Interested applicants with a bachelor's degree in any subject are encouraged to apply. Candidates for BA must have a minimum CGPA of 55% or equivalent and first division for all other degrees.

Admission process

The admission procedure includes shortlisting through an entrance examination or GATE 2024 score. The shortlisted candidates will then have to undergo an interview process for final selection. The fee structure of the program will be at par with other postgraduate programs of the Institute. The applications can be filled out through the institute's PG admission portal.

Opportunities

The program will train and equip students for a variety of fields including research, academia, social work, think tanks, media, and policymaking, among others, in government and non-governmental organizations, research institutes, social entrepreneurship organizations etc. Graduates from the MA program will also be eligible to join the doctoral programs offered by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Delhi, or other international doctoral programs.

Prof Farhana Ibrahim, Head of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Delhi, highlighted the program's features, saying, "The program offers a unique opportunity for students to explore courses across traditional disciplines, as well as to forge new synergies across existing Master's programs offered by the Department, viz. Cognitive Science and Economics. Its position at IIT Delhi provides it with a unique vantage point for creating a new corpus of knowledge, populating new types of archives, and developing critical techniques to steer humanities and social science research from the global south."

Students interested in the program can learn more about the course, costs, faculty members, scholarships, accommodations, academic and employment opportunities, and other details during an Open House on March 15, 2024.
