Students can now study across IIT campuses under new flexible academic system launched.
In a major step towards academic flexibility, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have introduced a new system that allows students to study across different IIT campuses. This initiative is being seen as a progressive reform in higher education, giving students more freedom to choose subjects and professors beyond their home institute.
Under this new arrangement, a student enrolled at IIT Madras can take certain courses at IIT Delhi or any other participating IIT. The credits earned will be transferred back to the parent institute. This means students are no longer restricted to only the resources available at their own campus. It opens many new academic opportunities.
Education experts believe this move will encourage collaboration between campuses. Students will get exposure to different teaching styles, research facilities, and peer groups. For example, if a particular IIT is known for artificial intelligence research, students from other IITs can benefit directly by enrolling in those specialised courses.
The flexible learning model also supports hybrid and online modes of education. Some courses may be attended physically, while others can be accessed digitally. This system makes learning more accessible and modern. It also matches global education trends where universities encourage credit transfers and cross-registration.
Many students have welcomed this change. They feel it will help them explore their interests in a better way. However, some have raised practical concerns about accommodation and scheduling, which authorities says will be addressed gradually.
This reform reflects how India’s premier technical institutes are evolving with time. By promoting mobility and academic freedom, IITs are trying to create a more student-centric environment. If implemented smoothly, this initiative could transform how engineering education works in the country.
