IIT Bombay maintains top spot in India as QS reveals Asia 2024 rankings.
In the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2024, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay maintains its top rating in India, while China maintains its top position. On the other hand, India now has more ranked universities than China.

With 148 featured universities, “India is now the most represented higher education system” in QS World University Rankings: Asia. This shows 37 new entries from India compared to last year’s report, which is significantly more than only seven new entries from China (mainland). The UK-based ranking agency, QS Quacquarelli Symonds declared its Asia ranking for the year 2024 on Wednesday.
This year, Peking University in the People's Republic of China continues to hold the top spot. Seven Indian universities are listed in the top 100 of the QS World University Rankings: Asia, with five of them being IITs and the other two being Delhi University and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
According to the report, "Mainland China sees only seven new additions to its list of ranked institutions, while India takes the lion's share of the new entries." "The increasing visibility of Indian universities in the QS rankings reflects the dynamic expansion of India's higher education landscape," said Ben Sowter, Senior Vice President of QS. The noteworthy improvement in the educational profile of the region is marked by the notable increase in the number of Indian institutions and their research contributions. However, it also shows the way forward for India to further enhance its standing in the international academic community.
Ten indicators were used to rank the universities: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, international relations network, citations per paper, paper per faculty, PhD staff, international faculty, international students, and outbound exchange students. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a UK-based company, specialises in the analysis of higher education institutions worldwide.
India is second among higher education systems with more than ten universities ranked in the region for papers per faculty (36.0 vs.14.8), although falling short of the regional average in employer and academic repute (9.6 vs. 18) (11.8 vs. 19). Among the top 10 institutions in the region for papers per faculty indication are seven Indian universities.
India has achieved its best average score for the staff with PhD’ indicator (42.3 vs 22), signalling a strong research output and a highly qualified faculty body. This is only lower than Hong Kong SAR (57.6) and Taiwan (47.3).
A five-year timeframe, excluding the present one, is used to calculate the QS papers per faculty indicator. The UK-based ranking agency stated that India's research output has grown rapidly between 2018 and 2022, increasing by about 60% during this time, "more than double the global average," the agency said, noting that China's growth rate for the same period is 9% higher, at 69%.
The QS World University rankings indicate that India is bridging the growth gap when looking at the shorter time frame of reference. For instance, between 2020 and 2022, China's research output increased by 31% while India's rose by 29%. This is a 7% decrease in the growth difference, indicating that India is closing the gap with its regional rival.
IIT Bombay (40th), IIT Delhi (46th), and IIT Madras (53rd) are the three Indian institutions in the top three, and they have all steadily held their Asia ranking from the previous year. IITs Kharagpur and Kanpur, which are ranked fifth and sixth respectively in the country, have experienced a significant increase in their Asia ranking. IIT Kharagpur has risen to 59 places from its 2023 ranking of 61.IIT Kanpur has jumped from rank 66 in last year to 63 in 2024.
Delhi University and the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore are the two non-IIT Indian universities ranked in the top 100 Asia. Both have seen a decline in their Asia ranks, even if they are still in the top 100. While Delhi University, which was placed 85th in 2023, is now at 94, just making it into the top 100 Asian universities, IISc Bangalore has plummeted to position 58 in 2024 from 52 last year.
