Students of Jamia Millia Islamia on Tuesday held a protest against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s Yuva Kumbh programme that was organised inside the university campus to mark 100 years of the RSS.

Student organisation All India Students' Association strongly opposed the event and said that RSS-linked programmes should not be held inside Jamia. The group claimed that the event was not suitable for a central university campus and raised slogans demanding its cancellation.

Another student body, Students' Federation of India, had also earlier objected to the programme. The organisation said permission given by the university administration for such an event was provocative and could create discomfort among students on campus.

According to protesting students, the Yuva Kumbh programme was part of a nationwide series of events being held to celebrate the 100th year of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. As soon as students gathered and started protesting, a heavy police force was deployed outside the university as a precautionary measure.

During the protest, students shouted slogans and asked the administration to immediately stop the event. They said educational institutions should remain free from political and ideological programmes that can create tension among students.

The protest at Jamia comes at a time when similar RSS-related programmes in some colleges of University of Delhi have also faced opposition in recent weeks.

At the time of reporting, Jamia Millia Islamia administration had not released any official statement on the controversy.
Jamia has witnessed many student-led protests in the past as well, and once again the campus has become a centre of political student activism in the national capital.
