The Kuki tribe's umbrella group addressed the Commission on Thursday, one day after the abhorrent video of the assault on two Kuki women went viral online.
The petition, which is addressed to UGC chairperson Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar and features the signatures of 310 students from both universities, claims that the universities have transformed into "a center of hatred, arson, and violence perpetrated by the majority Meitei community against minority tribal groups."
"Students and scholars of these two institutes of the highest learning have been uprooted and dispersed from their places of learning with recourse in light," the letter claims.
"Given the current environment, where ongoing violence is occurring, it is of greatest importance to transfer students who have been displaced by conflict to other colleges of their choosing in order to assure the continuation of their study. Otherwise, their future and profession may be permanently wrecked," the letter says.
