NAAC Accreditation Sees Record Participation

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has reported a significant surge in participation from higher education institutions across India. As of August 2025, total 11,829 universities and colleges have undergone the first cycle of NAAC accreditation, marking a sharp rise compare to the previous cycles.

Out of these, 2,533 institutions have got the prestigious Grade A status, reflecting India’s growing focus on quality assurance and academic accountability in higher education. The data shows 301 universities and 2,232 colleges secured Grade A, while 7,850 earned Grade B and 1,446 got Grade C.

Interestingly, over half of the universities assessed were graded A, showing stronger performance at the university level compare to colleges, where most of them fall under Grade B. This rise indicates both an improvement in institutional quality and more willingness among institutions to be evaluated transparently.

In comparison, the second cycle of NAAC evaluation covered only 5,505 institutions, which is less than half of the current participation. Experts believe this trend is a result of University Grants Commission (UGC) and NAAC’s continuous push for digital evaluation, simplified process and outcome-based education system.

The report also looked at Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centres (MMTTCs) academic staff training units. Among the 66 centres that was assessed, 13 were rated “performers,” 46 as “underperformers,” and 7 as “non-performers.” This rating is seen as part of a bigger effort to enhance faculty development and teaching excellence across the country.

As India move towards global education standards under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, NAAC’s widening accreditation network stands as a sign of quality, transparency and institutional growth all over the nation.
