The first medical college in the state, the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), opened its doors to its first 100 students on Friday. Chief Secretary J Alam remarked during the induction ceremony at the college's site in Phriebagie, Kohima, that the event not only marked the start of the academic year but also fulfilled the state's long-held desire to establish a medical college.

We now have our own medical college, which is a significant development for the entire state. The future of healthcare in the state will be shaped by this transformative journey, he said.

He continued by saying that everyone's aspirations came together to create the medical college.

Alam urged the institute's 45 faculty members to help create an exceptional institution.

He emphasised the importance of the students' future contribution to changing countless lives and eradicating healthcare inequities as he urged them to work hard.

Alam stated that the government will offer numerous forms of assistance in helping the institute become one of the greatest in the nation.

The inaugural batch contains 100 MBBS students, with 85 from Nagaland and 15 from other regions of the country, according to NIMSR dean-cum-director Dr. Soumya Chakraborty.

Ritu Thurr, principal director of health and family welfare, welcomed the students and noted that success does not come easily and requires a lot of planning, self-discipline, and sacrifice.

"There is no substitute for hard work. The harder you work, the luckier you get," she said.
