According to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, 7,033 positions in central universities have been reserved for SC, ST, and OBC candidates. As of July 1, 3,007 of these positions remained unfilled.

The minister provided the statistics in the Lok Sabha as part of a written response to a question from Janata Dal (United) member Ram Nath Thakur about the number of vacant reserved teaching positions in central universities. According to Pradhan, while 46% (1,665) of the OBC positions are unfilled, 37% (837) and 44% (505) are still to be filled by SC and ST candidates, respectively. The Union minister further stated that 517 individuals were hired under the reserved category this year. There were 285 OBCs, 150 SCs, and 82 STs among them.

In response to another query from CPI(M) leader John Brittas about overall vacancies at central universities, Pradhan stated that as of July 1, 22,412 of the 54,512 sanctioned posts in 45 central universities that operate on a regular basis and are overseen by the education ministry remained bare.

"Vacancies arise as a result of retirement, resignation, and increased requirements due to increased student strength." "Central universities have been directed to fill vacancies as they arise," he explained.

According to the Department of Personnel and Training's Mission Recruitment Portal, 6,087 positions have been filled through special recruitment efforts thus far.
