The UGC's action is intended to keep students from becoming victims of unaccredited and fraudulent educational establishments. Before enrolling, students and parents should check the accreditation status of universities.
"The UGC has learned that a number of institutions are awarding degrees in violation of the provisions of the UGC Act." Degrees conferred by such universities are neither accepted nor valid for further education or employment. "These universities are not authorized to confer any degree," said UGC secretary Manish Joshi in a statement. The UGC has published a list of fake universities:
DELHI
WEST BENGAL
ANDHRA PRADESH
KARNATAKA
KERALA
MAHARASHTRA
PUDUCHERRY
Last year, the UGC published a list of 21 universities labeled "fake." Several universities have been added to the list this -year as well. Universities are only authorized to issue degrees if they are formed under a Central, State/Provincial Act, or are recognized as deemed-to-be universities, according to the UGC.
Furthermore, institutions specifically authorized by an Act of Parliament have the authority to confer degrees on pupils. This assures that degree-granting institutions have the legal support and authorization to uphold academic standards and provide authentic qualifications to their students.
