Gurukulam focuses on holistic upbringing combining moral values spiritual discipline modern subjects rooted in Indian traditions.
Patanjali Gurukulam, located in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, claims it is reviving the timeless values of Indian education by merging Vedas, yoga and modern science. The school, founded by Swami Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna, says its aim is not just to give students degrees but shape their character. According to them, the system of ancient Gurukuls where students live with guru, learn Sanskrit, Vedas, philosophy, ethics shaped balanced personalities.
In this Gurukulam, students do morning routine with yoga-asanas, pranayama, and Sanskrit lessons. Afternoon classes cover mathematics, science, computers etc. In evening, they chant Vedic mantras, do service work. Idea is that physical, mental, spiritual growth occur together. They also teach foreign languages like German, French etc., besides Sanskrit, Hindi and English, but the main focus remains on Indian culture.
The founders argue that modern education is too market-oriented, chasing job placements more than values. They believe moral values like humility, truthfulness, self-awareness should be part education. Students reportedly show more discipline and contentment, and parents are pleased because children learn ethics along with academics.
But there are challenges: combining ancient traditions with modern facilities isn’t easy. Gurukulam sites say infrastructure, teacher training, balancing both traditional and new subject load take efforts. Despite challenges, the project is spreading. Visitors say this revival of Gurukul style education gives hope, particularly for those concerned that materialism has overshadowed values.
The initiative by Patanjali Gurukulam is being seen by many as part of nation-building. They hope future generation stay connected with their roots while being capable in science, technology and global trends.
