Professor Bhaskar Gupta has been named the next vice-chancellor of the state-run Jadavpur University. West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose appointed the senior professor to the position.
The selection of Gupta as VC was suggested by the state government, which provided a list of VCs from six state institutions, including JU. The university had been without a VC since April 2023, when the permanent VCs' extended tenure had ended.
Governor CV Anada Bose, who is also the chancellor of state-run universities, appointed Gupta as the vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University on Monday.
Education minister Bratya Basu, while welcoming the appointment said in X (formerly Twitter), "Good sense has prevailed."
Basu said further, "Prof Bhaskar Gupta has been appointed as the VC of Jadavpur University by the Honourable Chancellor. His name was recommended as the VC of the same university by the Higher Education department with the approval of the Hon'ble Chief Minister."
The Education minister in the past couple of months had arguments with the Raj Bhavan over the governor's alleged unilateral act to appoint interim VCs in 31 universities.
After the Supreme Court advocated the appointment of VCs of six state universities by the governor based on the list of names recommended by the state government, the chancellor met the Attorney General for resolving the issue.
The Jadavpur University Teachers' Association (JUTA) has welcomed the move.
Prof Buddhadev Sau, who was appointed by the governor as interim VC of Jadavpur University in August 2023 was removed from the post by the governor in December 2023.
