UGC Shifts Regulation of Management and Computer Programs to AICTE

In a recent notice, the University Grants Commission (UGC) declared that Management and Computer Programmes will henceforth be regulated by the All India Council for Technical Education.

Beginning with the next academic year, AICTE's oversight of Computer Applications and Management courses will be extended from postgraduate to undergraduate levels.

With its present emphasis on engineering, technology, and postgraduate Management (MBA) and Computer Applications (MCA) courses, AICTE's influence will soon expand to undergraduate programs.

The UGC, in its official notification, highlighted the regulatory shift. The move aligns with the All India Council for Technical Education Act, 1987, emphasizing that Technical Education encompasses a broader spectrum, including Management and Computer Applications.

In reaction to the regulatory expansion, the AICTE described the incentives accessible to accredited universities.

These include staff development programs, student scholarship schemes, access to model curriculum, free e-books in Indian languages via the e-Kumbh Portal, participation in the Margdarshan Scheme for Institutions, and PARAKH (Performance Analysis and Review for Holistic Development).

The decision to regulate undergraduate courses (BBA, BMS, and BCA) is rooted in AICTE's commitment to maintaining uniform quality and academic standards, mirroring those applied to postgraduate courses.

This move is expected to streamline the education landscape and enhance the overall educational experience for students in management and computer applications.

The UGC has urged affiliated institutions to disseminate the information to all concerned entities offering or intending to offer BBA, BMS, and BCA programmes.
