University of Birmingham and IIT Madras Launch Joint Masters Course

The University of Birmingham and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) are introducing a new Joint Masters course in Sustainable Energy Systems to enable graduates to become professionals in a rapidly expanding business leading the fight against climate change. Applications are now being accepted for this new course at the institutions.

After completing their studies in Chennai and Birmingham, students will get a single degree that is jointly granted by both institutions. Additionally, they will work on a significant independent project in globally renowned research groups, which will enable them to apply their expertise to practical problems.

The programme offers flexibility to students when they conclude the programme in Birmingham or IIT Madras. The programme will begin with students beginning their studies at IIT Madras and completing a short industrial placement. Students then have the option of two pathways:

Option 1 - Study in the UK for 12 months, including a research project in Birmingham

Option 2 - Study in the UK for six months, then return to IIT Madras to complete the programme and carry out a research project at IIT Madras.

The applications are available and the offer letters are scheduled to be sent out from 26th June 2024. Interested students can apply through the following link - https://ge.iitm.ac.in/uob/sustainable-energy-systems/

Speaking about this program, Prof Adam Tickell, vice-chancellor and principal, University of Birmingham, said: “Successful applicants will experience a global perspective as they learn the fundamental principles of sustainable energy systems – giving them a unique professional perspective that will help them to make a valuable career contribution to our fight against climate change.”

The interdisciplinary course focuses on energy systems and technologies that can help build a sustainable future. It covers technology development, engineering, and societal, economic, environmental, and policy aspects to help meet net-zero targets. Students will learn about the fundamental principles behind current energy systems, including fuel cells and hydrogen, energy storage, solar, and nuclear energy.

The course content will be delivered by research staff who have backgrounds in academia, industry and policy. Students will also benefit from innovative curricula with IIT Madras’ pedagogy and research methodology.
