Uttar Pradesh inaugurates first state level Braille library boosting inclusive education for visually impaired students
Uttar Pradesh Opens First Braille

In a significant step toward inclusive education the Uttar Pradesh government has launched the states first Braille library at Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University in Lucknow. The initiative aims to improve access to quality educational resources for visually impaired students across the state.

The library was inaugurated on the birth anniversary of Louis Braille the inventor of the Braille script symbolizing the states commitment to empowerment through education. Located inside the universitys central library the Braille section houses more than 4000 books printed in Braille format. These books cover undergraduate and postgraduate courses aligned with the National Education Policy.

For years visually impaired students have faced challenges in accessing textbooks relying mostly on audio material or limited printed resources. The new Braille library addresses this gap by offering structured academic content that allows students to study independently and confidently.

The facility also includes a spacious reading hall with seating for over 150 students making it one of the largest dedicated spaces for visually impaired learners in the region. Importantly the library is not restricted only to university students. Visually impaired individuals from across Uttar Pradesh can also use the facility expanding its social impact.

University officials highlighted that the books were produced using the institutions own Braille press ensuring curriculum accuracy and timely availability. Plans are already in place to expand the collection to nearly 10000 books in the coming months.

Educationists have welcomed the move calling it a landmark development for inclusive learning. They believe such initiatives can bridge educational gaps and encourage more students with disabilities to pursue higher education.

The Braille library stands as a powerful reminder that accessibility is not charity but a right. By creating spaces that support equal learning opportunities Uttar Pradesh has taken a meaningful step toward a more inclusive and empowered education system.
