Extreme cold and dense fog prompt school closures in several Indian states to protect student safety.
Why Schools Are Being Closed?
Several states have temporarily shut schools as harsh winter conditions made daily travel unsafe for students and staff. Dense fog during early morning hours drastically reduced visibility, increasing the risk of road accidents, especially for young children commuting to school. Along with fog, unusually low temperatures added to concerns about students’ health.
The closures apply to both government and private schools, with special focus on younger classes. Many parents welcomed the decision, saying it reduced stress and protected children from falling sick during extreme weather. Health experts also advised families to keep children warmly dressed, limit outdoor exposure, and stay alert to cold-related illnesses such as cough, cold, and flu.
To prevent academic disruption, some schools extended winter holidays, while others shifted to online classes.
However, the transition has been mixed:
Despite these challenges, most parents agreed that safety must come first.
In several districts, schools announced closures until January 20, depending on how long fog and cold conditions persist. Education officials stated that the situation is being reviewed daily based on weather updates and visibility reports. Schools will reopen only when conditions improve and travel becomes safer.
Teachers encouraged parents to use this break to ensure children get enough rest, eat nutritious food, and follow basic winter precautions. In areas where fog lingers longer, authorities also suggested delaying school start times once classes resume to avoid early morning travel risks.
Overall, the decision reflects a health-first approach by authorities. By acting early, officials aim to prevent accidents and illnesses, ensuring that students remain safe during extreme winter conditions.
